Northumberland will soon be home to Britishvolt, who are building their first large scale Gigafactory on Northumberland Energy Park in Cambois. Britishvolt are investing £2.6bn into the project which will create 3,000 jobs with an additional 5,000 jobs through their supply chain network.
Cambois was once the home of Blyth Power Station, a coal fired power station that operated in South East Northumberland for just over 40 years. The two chimneys of former Blyth Power Station were demolished in 2002, making way for future opportunities in Northumberland. Fast forward 20 years and Northumberland Energy Park is alive with new investment, innovation and has renewable energy at its core.
Britishvolt will occupy Phase 3 of Northumberland Energy Park, a 95 hectare site. Its gigafactory will produce 30GW of lithium-ion batteries a year powering up to 300,000 vehicles.
Adjacent to Britishvolt on Phase 2 of Northumberland Energy Park is the location of the North Sea Link (UK/Norway Interconnector site). The site is 35 hectares and of greenfield status. The site provides perfect opportunities for businesses in the electric vehicle and battery industry, due to its proximity to Britishvolt gigafactory, excellent road links and deep-water quay access.
The North East is proven to be a successful location for the automotive industry with OEM and component companies including Nissan, Turntide Technologies, ZF Automotive, Marelli and Gestamp Tallent accounting for one third of the UK’s total car production and employing almost 23,000 people. The opportunities to supply into a thriving market which is seeing growth in the region year on year offers investors an opportunity to be part of a thriving sector in the electrification of vehicles.
Advance Northumberland has investment opportunities available for electrification in our strategic sites: Northumberland Energy Park, Ashwood Business Park and Cramlington Industrial Estates.
Energy Central, located in South East Northumberland, is home to Northumberland Energy Park. Britishvolt will occupy Phase 3 when their first full-scale gigafactory opens in 2024.
