In December 2020, British Volt made a significant commitment to investing £2.6 billion in its first ever Gigafactory in Northumberland.  Plans to open the plant in 2023 are well underway.

 The plant will:

  • produce 30GW lithium-ion batteries powering up to 300,000 vehicles a year
  • create 3,000 direct jobs with a further 5,000 throughout the supply chain network

This investment will support Northumberland’s ambition to become the leading location for the future electrification of vehicles when British Volt joins other industry leaders in power electronics such as AVID Technology.

Supply chain opportunities will be significant, and a strong cluster is now well on its way to being established with the support of a strong network of organisations including the North East Automotive Alliance, the Department for International Trade and Driving the Electric Revolution.

Northumberland can offer supply chain companies co location opportunities as well as strategic sites all within a 10 minute drive of the Gigafactory site at Ashwood Business Park, Northumberland Energy Park (2) and Cramlington Industrial Estates.

Advance Northumberland can offer investors a bespoke package of support that will help to ensure a great experience when investing in Northumberland.

The North East is proven to be a successful location for the automotive industry with OEM and component companies including Nissan, TRW, Marelli and Gestamp Tallent accounting for one third of the UK’s total car production and employing almost 23,000 people.  The opportunities to supply into a thriving market which is seeing growth in the region year on year offers investors an opportunity to be part of a thriving sector in the electrification of vehicles.
